My first serious attempt at developing a website has become boring and probably a waste of time (and money). The next fee for the domain is due soon and I’m considering ditching it.
I became interested in developing church websites about 11 years ago when Iain started www.scottishchristian.com and Alison the web church . They ran a seminar in Dundee called ‘Into the Net’ about getting the church on-line. ‘Half the world is on line God is there so we should be too-’ One thing in particular I remember, is the advice to start with something that is interesting and appropriate to draw people to your site. Millions of people visit the Mormons website and if just a small percentage go on to explore the Mormon faith that’s quite a lot of hits!
At the time I was representing my Church fellowship on the local area of Churches grouping Newington Churches Together. Basically clergy and reps meet 3 times a year. Basic activities seem to be arranging ‘exchange of Pulpits’ and shared services before Easter- and encouraging Ecumenical study Groups during Lent. I longed to see more coming together, working, worshipping together as the local church- so I set about learning to set up a web-site. A few of the Church members had their own website but most did not-nor I confess was anyone showing interest in a Community one.
It has 3 sections- the introductory community one, the churches one which perhaps people would follow up and another which enables me to start something more ‘Spiritual’
After 2 years I am considering abandoning this project. It could only really be for those coming to or living locally, It is pretty basic; meant to be informative rather than entertaining and I have been learning as I go. Most of those on Committees or who know about this are not at all interested in computers and the internet and those outside the churches perhaps are finding what they want without my efforts. It is so easy to Google!
So in the New Year I will have to decide and learn the will of God on this. Perhaps I should just concentrate on ‘blogging’ – what do you think?
